(NEW) Climate Change Resilience for Building Sector Professionals
The Climate Change Resilience for Building Sector Professionals Course is a new e-learning course aimed at empowering Canada’s building practitioners with the knowledge and resources needed to build a safer, more resilient future.
The Climate Risk Institute (CRI) in collaboration with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia , developed the course which provides a knowledge foundation for the use of climate risk assessment and climate resiliency measures for the planning, design, and construction of Part 3 buildings. The Development of a Climate Resiliency Training Program for Building Sector Professionals project is funded by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).
The course marks the first consolidated Canadian body of training focused on capacity building and climate upskilling for the use of climate resiliency measures by buildings sector practitioners. The content is tailored for practitioners involved in the planning, design, and construction of Part 3 buildings (larger buildings exceeding 600 m2 in area or exceeding three storeys in height). The course will be of interest to engineers, architects, building scientists, planners, policy makers, and procurement specialists.
Course Details
The course consists of five (5) modules of 1.5-hour lectures delivered online over five sequential weeks. Each week will follow a similar format. An introductory video will set the stage for the week ahead. Weekly readings, videos and pre-recorded lectures introduce new concepts and information, and students are prompted to engage with and test that knowledge via discussion board questions, activities, and quizzes. The weekly modules will wrap up with a live session with the lead instructor, where learners can expect a mix of presentations, review of key concepts, case study and scenario explorations, and facilitated discussions.
The 5 modules:
- Module 0 Climate Change 101 (Optional)
- Module 1 Building Resilience Foundations
- Module 2 Climate Change for Buildings
- Module 3 Risk Assessment and Decision Making
- Module 4 Applications of Climate Resilience Strategies
- Module 5 Climate Resilience Planning
The Climate Change Resilience for Building Sector Professionals course will be added to an existing suite of courses that make up the Infrastructure Resilience Professional (IRP) credential, delivered through Climate Risk Institute in partnership with Professional and Continuing Studies at Royal Roads University.

| Assessment | Description |
| Discussion Forum Participation (30%) | Weekly discussion forums require original posts and original contribution and responses to posts from peers in all forum discussions. |
| Summative Task (30%) | A summative assignment requires students to apply concepts and knowledge from course content to an applied scenario or case study. |
| Weekly Quiz (0%) | Weekly quizzes are not graded. |
| Final Quiz (30%) | Multiple choice final exam. |
| Live Session Attendance and Participation (10%) | Learners attend and participate in interactive, live sessions. |
The Summative Task (30%) will be based on the following expectations:
Course Instructor
Robert Lepage, PhD, P.Eng.
Dr. Robert Lepage, P.Eng., is a nationally recognized expert in climate change resilience for buildings. He advises on climate adaptation and mitigation pathways in existing buildings and new construction. Part of these efforts includes serving on regional, national, and international standard and guideline committees. With insights into the emerging challenges of climate change impacts on buildings based on his climate risk assessment and building science consulting experience, Dr. Lepage provides industry leading support to address climate change. These services range from specific project support to delivering workshops, lectures, and guidance material on climate resilience principles, heuristics, and tools to increase awareness and help develop solutions.

Course Facilitator
Santinah Green-Mignacca, B. Eng, MASc.
Santinah is a Buildings, Engineering and Infrastructure Resilience Analyst with the Climate Risk Institute. She recently graduated with a Master of Science in Building Engineering. She also earned a Bachelor of Architectural Conservation and Sustainability Engineering, both from Carleton University. In her research she has aimed to advance the understanding and quantification of resilient buildings and with her experience, she has helped to develop this course. She is very passionate about nature and the environment and hopes to use the knowledge she has gained to help make buildings and the way humans interact with them more sustainable.
