OPPI/ORCCA/CRI – Adaptation Planning Guide Release

The Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI), in partnership with the Climate Risk Institute (CRI) and the Ontario Resource Centre for Climate Adaptation (ORCCA/CRACO) are excited to announce the publication of a Climate Change Adaptation Practice Guide.
The increasing impacts of climate change are affecting built, ecological, cultural, and socio-economic systems across Ontario. Registered Professional Planners (RPPs) play an integral role in advancing climate adaptation and advancing community resilience to support local needs and priorities.
The new Climate Change Adaptation Practice Guide includes four key sections designed to support planners and practitioners from related fields advance climate change adaptation efforts and apply planning interventions into practice.
The Climate Change and Planning section equips planners with an overview of essential knowledge about the impacts of climate change in Ontario. It provides a foundational insight into the role that planners and planning practice play in advancing adaptation, and important legislative frameworks and policies to enable adaptation planning interventions in the province.
The Climate Hazards and Adaptation Planning section provides detailed insight into key climate hazards across the province and opportunities for risk management through planning interventions.
The Planning Interventions Supporting Climate Adaptation section explores twelve practical interventions that planners can use in practice, from high-level strategies to targeted tools, to mitigate climate risks and build resilience in communities.
The Guide concludes with an extensive Resource Guide. Building on the insights of the Guide, it provides an extensive list of tailored planning resources and case studies to support ongoing learning and adaptation capacity building and implementation.
“The Climate Risk Institute is proud to partner with OPPI and ICLEI on this essential guide to climate adaptation. Packed with practical tools and insights from Ontario communities, it’s a vital resource for planners working to build resilient communities.” says Steph Gagnon, President of CRI.
Climate Risk Institute is proud to be an authoring partner. We look forward to continued collaboration with OPPI and ORCCA to support climate adaptation and resilience capacity-building for the planning profession across the province, and beyond.
