Alex Long
Alex Long is a passionate city builder with over 15 years’ experience in designing and leading programs to support local climate action, sustainability and community resilience. As Senior Manager for Capacity Building and Knowledge Services at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), Alex led a team of program managers and was responsible for developing programs and networks to support innovative municipal sustainability and climate change projects across Canada. Based on his extensive municipal experience, knowledge and networks, Alex participated in an interchange with Infrastructure Canada to develop and implement flagship Government of Canada programs including Canada’s first Smart Cities Challenge and the Canada Healthy Communities Initiative. In addition to his Canadian experience, Alex has a deep knowledge of global best practice related to urban resilience through recent postgraduate research at the Bartlett School of Planning (University College London, UK). This includes a substantive understanding of the barriers to building urban adaptive capacity and greater resilience to current and future shocks. In addition to his experience related to urban resilience and local government innovation, early career roles include Legislative Assistant to a Member of Parliament and Senior Policy Advisor for Climate and Energy at the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy.
Alex holds graduate degrees in Urban Planning (Bartlett School of Planning, University College London) and Environmental Studies (York University, Toronto).
