Who is the Climate Risk Institute?  

The Climate Risk Institute (CRI) is a non-profit, academically affiliated organization whose mission is to build capacity, advance practice, and deliver services for climate change risk assessment and resiliency planning in Canada and abroad.   

We run programs, develop and coordinate projects to mobilize knowledge, improve capacity, and deliver results for climate resiliency. CRI supports all levels of government, Indigenous communities, sector and professional associations, and private sector companies to enhance the consideration of climate change in various planning and management processes, including enterprise risk management, disaster risk management, hazard identification and risk assessment, corporate planning, infrastructure planning and renewal, and policy and program development and implementation.

We are seeking a dynamic and proactive Senior Training Specialist, Climate Resiliency to join our training and capacity development team. In this pivotal role, you will contribute your knowledge of climate action, your expertise in training and capacity building, and your creativity, to become a key part of the future of CRI’s Training Services Program.  

You will join our team at a time of considerable opportunity. CRI is poised to build off our already remarkable set of training programs and partnerships, including: the Infrastructure Resiliency Professional (IRP) Training and Credentialling Program, specialist courses Low-Carbon and Resilient Buildings, municipal-sector cohorts, and ongoing partnerships with international development agencies and organizations. In this role, you’ll have an opportunity to help shape the strategy for the team’s growth, lead exciting and challenging projects, and serve a growing audience of climate resiliency practitioners across a range of sectors in Canada and abroad.  

Key Responsibilities:  

Project Research, Coordination and Execution:  

  • Develop training programs and learning objectives to support range of initiatives, from multi-year training and upskilling programs to individual course plans.   
  • Review and translate research into engaging and effective training materials and activities.  
  • Provide direction and support to colleagues contributing to training and capacity development projects.  
  • Collaborate with fellow CRI team members, associates and external experts to seamlessly integrate and deliver climate training and capacity development services or deliverables within domestic and international projects.  
  • Integrate justice, equity, diversity and reconciliation within capacity development and training initiatives.  
  • Develop creative, evidence-based, and engaging training materials for a variety of audiences in the areas of climate change risk assessment, adaptation, low carbon resilience.  
  • Amplify the voice of CRI’s training and capacity development team by contributing to our social media accounts, conference presentations, website content and more.   

Strategy and Implementation:  

  • Contribute to the renewal of the training program strategy and support its execution and implementation.  
  • Work with the Training Lead and CRI executive to identify and develop new initiatives and projects. 
  • Contribute to the development of strategic partnerships in Canada and abroad, to advance adaptation practice within professions (e.g., Planners, Engineers, Landscape Architects), levels of government, economic sectors.   
  • Leverage prominent CRI initiatives and research – for example on climate action and professional competencies, international climate resilience and development projects, and sector-specific work – to identify, prioritize and develop new areas of training and credentialing.  

Project Management:  

  • Successfully execute training projects through excellent project management skills and resources.  
  • Maintain a close eye on project progress and financial status; collaborate with Training Lead to identify and manage issues in project management and delivery.  
  • Complete financial, narrative and progress reporting for projects, including client or grant reports.  
  • Be attentive and responsive to client communications and requests.  
  • Work with Training Lead, CRI Executive and CRI associates and subject matter experts to draft and process Terms of Reference, Statements of Work or other contract and partnership agreements.  

Qualifications, Skills and Attributes 

  • Minimum 7 years combined experience in climate and training.  
  • Bachelor’s degree in fields related to climate change and/or education and extension. Advanced degree in education or associated with climate research (e.g., MSc, M.A., M.A.Sc, M.Ed.) or equivalent experience is a plus.  
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of creative, engaging and evidence-based training and capacity development programs for both online and in-person environments, including learning design and facilitation.  
  • Knowledge of climate mitigation, climate risk assessment, or climate change adaptation. 
  • Stellar communication and interpersonal skills.  
  • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks.  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); project management tools; and learning management software (e.g., Moodle).   
  • Experience in financial reporting, budget tracking, or grant reporting.  
  • Bi/multi-lingualism would be an asset   
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada. 

Salary & Benefits:  

  • $70,000 – 86,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  
  • Annual cost-of-living and performance-based increments.  
  • Annual vacation allotment, including CRI closure between Dec 24 and the New Year.
