Online Training for agricultural producers, stewardship organizations, and conservation authorities in the Grey, Bruce, and Huron counties
The Climate Risk and Resiliency Training Collaborative, presented by Climate Risk Institute (CRI) with support from Ontario Agri-Food Research Initiative (OAFRI) will be hosting three training sessions in January. The sessions are tailored specifically for agricultural producers, organizations, and conservation authorities in the Grey, Bruce, and Huron counties and will cover a variety of topics including climate hazards and data, vulnerability, adaptation strategies, and best management practices.
January 23, 2023, 1-3 pm EST – Regional Climate Data and Application in Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Response Planning
Stewardship and conservation of farmland and natural spaces in Grey, Bruce and Huron counties requires knowledge of and careful planning in a changing climate. This training session will provide background on climate science, data, and the latest climate projections, to help the farming and conservation communities understand possible risks and plan for climate resilience. Key climate risks and opportunities for agriculture will be reviewed, and participants will walk through steps they can take to assess and address vulnerabilities. Participants will leave the session with a better understanding of anticipated climate change impacts and hazards directly relevant to their sector and region, and will be able to navigate, access and use climate data to support their planning and operations.
January 24, 2023, 1-3 pm EST –Climate Resiliency and Adaptation Response Planning for Cash Crop Farmers in Grey, Bruce and Huron Counties
Cash crop production in southern Ontario, including Grey, Bruce and Huron counties, faces a number of challenges linked to changing weather conditions. This training session will focus on existing vulnerabilities within cash crop production in the region and provide details on crop sensitivity, exposure and capacity to adapt and become more resilient in the future. Training materials will draw from research products, including a case study series on best management practices adopted across the region. During a small group exercise, instructors will facilitate knowledge sharing on adaptation responses and offer insights for critically evaluating climate risks and identifying on-farm response measures. Participants will leave the session with a better understanding of current and future risks and opportunities to cash crop production. They will have increased awareness of climate change vulnerability and factors that influence it, and will be able to make informed decisions on applying recommended responses and adopting best management practices to mitigate climate risks.
January 26, 2023, 1-3 pm EST – Climate Resiliency and Adaptation Response Planning for Livestock Farmers in Grey, Bruce and Huron Counties
Livestock production in southern Ontario, including Grey, Bruce and Huron counties, faces a number of challenges linked to changing weather conditions. This training session will focus on existing vulnerabilities in the region and provide details on adaptive capacity and building resilience for the years to come.
